STUPID PLOTS, the long-running band from Fukui prefecture, Japan, return with four new songs of fast melodic punk inspired by US bands like CRIMPSHRINE, FIFTEEN, and GRIMPLE. Formed with a friend as youngsters in 1994 by brothers Shogo and Junpei Yamaguchi, the trio self-recorded and released (on their own Roadside Records) three full length CDs and five splits and EP on vinyl and CD between 1996 and 2000.
Back with a new lineup since the release of an acoustic CDEP in 2016 and a split CD with THE VEEVERS (UK) in 2021, “Should and Want” is issued on CD in a slimline jewel case with foldout lyric sheet featuring artwork and English liner notes by Shogo (guitar/vocals) and a bonus exclusive poster and numbered card for the first 30 copies sold in the US. The release itself is a tribute to the feeling Shogo had in middle school discovering obscure bands on the CD format (with the slimline jewel case a nod to an old I FARM CD!).
The current STUPID PLOTS lineup is rounded out by Toru Konishya (bass/vocals) and Kouji Urai (drums) from WHAT GOES UP (JP) and this crop of songs was recorded at the Fukui’s local Studio Orange Room.
STUPID PLOTS will playing MATSURI2025 presented by Break A School on October 11-12, 2025 in Hachiōji, Japan. The festival features tons of Japanese punk including Shogo’s daughter’s punk band, bedgravity! The new full length CD “Unmet Needs” by bedgravity is available now from Waterslide Records (JP) with a vinyl release due soon on Brassneck Records (UK) and Bloated Kat Records (US). Other notable bands playing MATSURI2025 include HOGPITS, MODERN GOODDAYS, NOBODYS, STARVINGMAN, THE URCHIN, THE.VISIT, TURNCOAT, WHAT GOES UP , and ZERO FAST.
